DOJ: Greensburg woman confesses to stealing Social Security benefits after relative’s death
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A 62-year-old Greensburg woman pleaded guilty to stealing $50,000 in Social Security benefits meant for a deceased family member.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ellison C. Travis said that Beverly Watson McNabb entered her guilty plea to one count of theft of government funds. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) said that McNabb could access the bank account for R.W., her elderly relative. R.W. received retirement benefits from Social Security and died on Dec. 5, 2015, but the benefits continued to be deposited into the account.
