Gov. Reeves launches ‘Mission 3′ to support military bases, grow South Mississippi economy
BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – Governor Tate Reeves announced the formation of ‘Mission 3′ on Thursday, an effort to support military bases and grow the local economy.
The governor’s office describes it as a public-private nonprofit defense community support organization focused on supporting military bases, growing the economy, and bringing South Mississippi communities together.
The name Mission 3 reflects the organization’s dedication to three core pillars: Military, Defense, and Community.
“Mississippi’s military and defense communities are worthy of appreciation, support, and investment,” said Reeves. “Through Mission 3, Mississippi will add another valuable tool in its toolbox to better support those who have sacrificed so much for us.”
South Mississippi is home to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, and the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County.
The goal of Mission 3 is to bring together the defense workforce and education efforts, strengthen infrastructure, and draw in more investment.
“Mission 3 is our region’s answer to a changing defense economy,” said Jamie Miller, President and CEO of the Gulf Coast Business Council. “It’s how we protect what we’ve built, grow what we’ve earned, and do right by the service members and families who serve us all.”
The executive director will be retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Paul Drake.
“Mission 3 will bring military leaders, businesses, and local officials together to speak with one unified voice – because no single organization can protect, enhance, and expand our region’s defense economy alone,” said Drake.
Mission 3 is supported by a $325,000 Defense Community Support Program grant from the Mississippi Development Authority, which required a 20% matching contribution from the Gulf Coast Business Council.
The funding was provided as a one-time appropriation during the 2024 legislative session.
The funds were awarded this year and will be used over the next two years to support the organization’s establishment.
