How will markets open today? Dow Jones down, GIFT Nifty in red, and 6 other cues to watch at this hour
The global markets are trading on a weak note. The GIFT Nifty is trading 21 points, or 0.08% lower, at 25,622. Here are domestic as well as key global cues to watch before the market opens that include crude oil prices, FII and DII data, business groups that most affect, sectoral performance, etc.
Earlier on Thursday, the NSE Nifty 50 closed the session 262 points or 1.03% higher at 25,585, while the BSE Sensex rose 862 points or 1.04% to close at 83,468.
Key global and domestic cues to know on October 17, 2025
US markets
The US markets closed Thursday’s session on a lower note as trade tensions and an ongoing U.S. government shutdown persist. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 301.07 points, or nearly 0.7%, to close at 45,952.24. Earlier in the day, the 30-stock index had gained 170 points. The S&P 500 finished 0.6% lower at 6,629.07. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.5% to settle at 22,562.54.
Asian Markets
The Asian markets were trading on a lower note, following the overnight losses on Wall Street. Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 0.43% in early trade, while the broad-based Topix fell 0.33%. South Korea’s markets bucked the trend, with the Kospi rising 0.56%. Meanwhile, the small-cap Kosdaq climbed 0.44%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index futures were at 25,862, lower than the HSI’s last close of 25,888.51.
US dollar
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar’s value against a basket of six foreign currencies, was trading 0.15% lower at 98.21 on Friday morning. The index evaluates the strength or weakness of the US dollar in comparison to major currencies. The basket contains currencies such as the British Pound, Euro, Swedish Krona, Japanese Yen, Swiss Franc, etc. The rupee appreciated 0.15% to close at 87.82 to the dollar on October 16.
Crude oil
The crude oil prices traded on a lower note on Friday morning. WTI crude prices were trading at $57.38, up by 0.15%, while Brent crude prices were trading at $60.97, a fall of 0.15%.
FII, DII data
Foreign institutional investors (FII) were the net sellers of shares worth Rs 997.29 crore. On the other hand, the Domestic institutional investors (DII) were the net buyers of shares worth Rs 4,076.20 crore on October 16, 2025, according to the provisional data available on the NSE.
Gold rate today
The rate for 24-carat gold today is Rs 1,30,230 per 10 grams, trading at its all-time high. The safe haven’s price is trading above the Rs 1.30 lakh mark. The price of gold has risen by 18% over the past one month. The 22 kt gold rate today is Rs 1,19,378 per 10 grams. The 18-carat gold price today is Rs 97,673.
The beverages – non alcoholic sector’s stocks rose the most in Thursday’s strong trade, rising 3.6% in the market capitalisation. However, aquaculture stocks fell the most, declining 2.75%. It was followed by the cables sector. Shipping stocks also fell in the trade.
The Ruchi Group’s market cap rose the most in Thursday’s session, rising 5.3%. It was followed by the Garware Group. Apart from that, the Poddar Group’s market capitalisation surged the most, rising 2.75%. In the list of Poddar stocks, Poddar Housing and Development’s share increased 5%.
