Is another interest rate cut coming?
An ag economist says he doesn’t expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in the short-term.
University of Missouri’s Ben Brown says, “These measures of inflation directly impact most farmers through the expectations of interest rates,” he said. “I don’t think anything in this data signals that the Fed’s going to move forward with interest rate cuts here at maybe their next couple meetings, certainly not in January.”
He tells Brownfield there’s been some downward pressure on commodity prices with elevated interest rates. “We’ve maybe found a floor for the timing being in interest rates,” Brown said.
The most recent interest rate cut occurred in December when the Fed lowered rates by a quarter percent.
Brown made his comments during Brownfield’s Weekly Commodity Market Update, which can be viewed below.
