Longtime Bangor OB/GYN celebrates retirement
BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – The community came out to celebrate a longtime local healthcare provider Friday afternoon.
Since 1986, Bangor native Joseph Benoit has been providing OB/GYN services to women in the area.
On Friday, his colleagues, family and patients came by Downeast OB/GYN to send him off on his retirement.
Alongside Downeast, Benoit has worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center.
As he enters retirement, he describes the outpour of support as “emotional” and “overwhelming.”
Benoit says it is uncommon for OB/GYNs to work in one place like he has, with most transferring every six to seven years.
Ultimately, he says he’s thankful for the bonds he has been able to form over the years.
“The nicest thing about it is the taking care of the generations,” describes Benoit of his work. “Taking care of somebody, delivering their baby, and then 25 years later, delivering the baby for the person you delivered 25 years ago.“
Now, Benoit says his retirement plans consist of seeing his grandkids, traveling with his wife and spending time at their second home in Georgia a few months out of the year.
