Manitowoc Police warn of scams involving cryptocurrency targeting older people
MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) – Manitowoc Police is warning the public about cryptocurrency scams that continue to circulate in the community.
These scams usually target older adults. Police encourage people to consider having an open and honest conversation with older relatives who might be susceptible to these or any other types of scams.
Cryptocurrency and bitcoin scams can originate from various sources, including phone calls, emails, text messages, social media, fraudulent websites, or computer pop-up ads.
Scammers generally operate with a sense of urgency and secrecy when requesting personal or financial information, including cryptocurrency payments.
• Only a scammer will demand payment in cryptocurrency.
• No government agency or legitimate business will request cryptocurrency as a form of payment.
• Cryptocurrency payments do not come with legal protections.
• Cryptocurrency payments are typically not reversible.
