Minister wants to 'keep investing' in Jersey sport

The government has to “keep investing” in the sporting community, the Minister for Infrastructure has said.

Constable Andy Jehan tightened the last nut on the frame of the new £8.4m Oakfield Sports Centre on Thursday.

Work began in August on the facility in St Saviour, which the government said would be a “key base” for the sporting community.

Mr Jehan said the government worked closely with the sporting community to make sure all “specifications” were met.

He said: “We have to continue to invest in our sporting facilities are only for islanders, but also to attract visiting teams here.

“We’ve got a lot of successful teams – be that rugby, football, netball, cricket – there’s a great summer ahead of us of sports and hopefully next summer this facility will be being used.”

The centre, based next to an existing sports hall and 3G football pitch, is set to deliver the curriculum for Hautlieu School and Highlands College, which were previously provided by Fort Regent.

“There’s been a lot of pressure to put some small sporting facilities in the east of the island and I’m delighted that this is in St Saviour,” Mr Jehan added.
