Netizens want Trump to stop Russia-Ukraine war with 'trade': 'Same as he did during India-Pak conflict'
In May, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that US cooperation helped prevent a war between India and Pakistan and avert a likely nuclear disaster.
As fears grow of the Russia-Ukraine war escalating after Ukraine attacked Russian naval bases with drones and reportedly destroyed around 40 of its bombing aircraft on Sunday, there have been calls for the US to mediate peace between the two countries. While political analysts debate whether Washington knew of Ukraine’s plans, further complicating the geopolitical relations, social media commentators have taken to questioning if US President Donald Trump can use his favourite weapon–trade–to escalate the tension.
This comes days after Trump and the US administration put on record that it was Trump’s trade access offer that “averted” the India-Pakistan war.
“I hope US President Donald Trump will stop Russia-Ukraine war by using ‘trade’, same as he did during the India-Pakistan conflict,” several social media users wrote on X.

In May, Trump had repeatedly claimed that US cooperation helped avoid a likely nuclear disaster. Speaking from the Oval Office alongside Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Trump noted on May 30, “We have the greatest leaders in the world, and I want to thank the leaders of India and Pakistan. They understood. They agreed. And the fighting stopped…. We stopped India and Pakistan from fighting. I believe that could have turned into a nuclear disaster.”
The US president added that trade discussions played a key role in the de-escalation. “We told them, ‘We can’t trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons.’ They got it,” he said, suggesting that economic pressure helped bring both sides to the table.
In a court submission on May 23, the US government said that the May 10 ‘ceasefire’ was possible ‘only after’ Trump offered ‘trading access’ to India and Pakistan. The legal filing was submitted in the US Court of International Trade during a case against the US President and a bunch of his departments over the tariffs introduced on April 2.
Meanwhile, India has summarily rejected all ceasefire claims made by Trump and his administration that the US mediated for a truce between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
