New poll delivers brutal news about Trump’s economy
Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the state of the economy and job market under President Donald Trump, according to the latest CBS News poll.
The CBS News/YouGov poll, released Thursday, found that 59% of Americans believe the economy is “getting worse,” which is up from the 54% who said the same in July’s survey. This is likely because many Americans report that prices for goods and services in their areas have risen recently.
The poll found 64% of Americans said that prices for goods and services they’ve purchased have increased in the last few weeks, 31% said the prices have remained the same and just 5% said the prices were dropping.
And Americans have little hope that prices will go down.
According to the poll, 28% of respondents said prices will go up “a lot” over the next few months and 39% expect prices to go up “a little.” Another 20% said prices would remain the same, while 11% said prices will go down “a little.”
The poll results also showed 52% of Americans believe the job market is “bad,” which is up from the 44% who said it was “bad” in April. Just 33% said the job market was “good,” down from the 41% who said the same in April.
The poll also asked Americans to compare the current job market with that of five years ago.
Forty-eight percent said there are now fewer good jobs where they live, 40% said it was about the same and 12% said there were more good jobs.
The poll was conducted among 2,489 U.S. adults between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
The poll comes as Trump has threatened to impose more tariffs on goods coming into the U.S., which will likely drive up costs for Americans. It also comes as the country enters its third day of a federal government shutdown after Congress failed to pass a spending package to fund the government past the Sept. 30 deadline.
