Omaha’s Warren Buffett is reportedly donating $6 billion worth of his company’s stock to 5 organizations
WELL, AS THE ORACLE OF OMAHA PHASES INTO RETIREMENT, A NEW ERA BEGINS FOR BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY. BEDROCK OF BUSINESS IN OMAHA IS CHANGING. GOOD EVENING. I’M ROB MCCARTNEY. I’M JULIE CORNELL. MANY ARE WONDERING IF WARREN BUFFETT’S ANNOUNCEMENT MEANS THE COMPANY WILL STRAY FROM ITS OMAHA ROOTS. WILL THE STOCK’S VALUE FALL? WILL BERKSHIRE WEEKEND STAY IN OMAHA? WELL, KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S PETE CUDDIHY SPOKE WITH ECONOMIC EXPERTS AND SHAREHOLDERS TO GET SOME ANSWERS. PETE. ROB. JULIE. THOSE I SPOKE TO SAID THEY WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED IF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY TOOK A SLIGHT HIT IN THE MARKET TOMORROW. HOWEVER, THEY SAY THE COMPANY HAS A STRONG FOUNDATION AND THEY EXPECT IT TO CONTINUE TO PROSPER. AS FOR THE ANNUAL SHAREHOLDERS WEEKEND, THEY SAY THEY EXPECT IT TO STAY IN OMAHA. WARREN BUFFETT’S IMPACT ON OMAHA CAN’T BE OVERSTATED. ANYWHERE FROM 40 TO $50 MILLION OF IMPACTS, ECONOMIC IMPACTS. AND THAT’S IN ADDITION TO THE MEDIA COVERAGE. EVERY TIME THEY SAY BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY, EVERY TIME THEY SAY WARREN BUFFETT, THEY SAY IN OMAHA. LEAVING MANY QUESTIONING WHAT’S NEXT. AS THE ORACLE OF OMAHA STEPS DOWN AS CEO OF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY. THE STOCK PRICE, THE THE COMPANY ITSELF, ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE GOING TO BE JUST FINE. I THINK OMAHA WILL BE PERHAPS WHAT’S MOST IMPACTED SHAREHOLDERS AND ECONOMIC EXPERTS ALIKE WORRIED THAT WITHOUT BUFFETT CONTROLLING THE COMPANY, THE WOODSTOCK OF CAPITALISTS MIGHT NOT DRAW IN THE SAME CROWDS? IS HE GOING TO BE AT THE EVENT NEXT YEAR? IS HE GOING TO BE ON STAGE? YOU KNOW, PEOPLE COME TO SEE HIM, RIGHT? SO IS ATTENDANCE GOING TO BE 40,000, 30,000, 20,000 OR IS IT GOING TO BE 100,000 BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, SO WE STILL DON’T KNOW. MOST PEOPLE THAT I SPOKE WITH HAVE FAITH THAT BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY WILL CONTINUE TO THRIVE ON THE MARKET DUE TO ITS STRONG BUSINESSES. YOU GOT TO LOOK UNDERNEATH THE HEADLINES AND LOOK AT WHAT IS THE THE DRIVING FORCE, THE PROFIT BEHIND IT. AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS WILL REMAIN THE SAME TOMORROW, DESPITE SOME BEING WORRIED ABOUT CROWD SIZES SHRINKING. WITHOUT BUFFETT, SHAREHOLDERS DON’T SEE THE EVENT GOING ANYWHERE. I DON’T THINK IT WILL MOVE TO ANOTHER CITY WHETHER OR NOT IT’S GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE SOMETHING THAT THEY WANT TO DO, AND THAT ATTRACTS REALLY LARGE CROWDS, I GUESS IS KIND OF TO BE SEEN. SAYING THE TRADITION BELONGS IN OMAHA, NEBRASKA. I THINK 100%. BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY IS BASED IN OMAHA. EVENTS WILL BE IN OMAHA. THEIR OFFICE IS IN BLACKSTONE PLAZA. THIS IS AN OMAHA EVENT, AND OMAHA IS ONE OF THE GREATEST PLACES IN THE WORLD. EVERYONE THAT I SPOKE TO SAID THAT THEY EXPECT GREG ABEL TO BE AS GOOD OF A CEO, IF NOT BETTER, THAN WARREN BUFFETT. HOWEVER, THEY SAID HE’S NOT GOING TO BE AS POPULAR AS THE MAIN ATTRACTION. WARREN BUFFETT. ONE SHAREHOLDER EVEN SAID BUFFETT WILL CONTINUE TO COME INTO THE OFFICE EVERY DAY, LEADING FORWARD. REPORTING FROM OMAHA.
