Social Security delays: Why checks are being sent out later than normal this month
Recipients are receiving Social Security payments later than usual in May. Here’s why.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Some people may get their Social Security checks later this month.
Verify’s gotten a lot of questions as to why Social Security benefits are being delivered later in May. Because the month started on Thursday, officials say recipients will see their checks later in the month.

For the most part, Social Security payments are issued on Wednesdays. If your birth date falls between the first and 10th day of the month, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday, which is May 14. For folks born the 11th through 20th, they’ll be paid on May 21. And finally, anyone born between the 21st and 31st, they’ll be paid on May 28.
This is the latest it will ever be on any given month.
Due to other quirks in the calendar, retirees who get Supplemental Security Income checks are getting two additional checks in May, one for May and another for June.
If you don’t receive your payment on the exact date SSA said, you should allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security.
