Social Security is sending out checks for $2,000 on average today, Wednesday May 14: This is who gets a payment
Millions of Social Security beneficiaries are scheduled to receive their latest monthly check today.
Who gets a Social Security check today, May 14?
Of the U.S.’s nearly 70 million recipients of retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or survivor benefits, many get their money on one of three Wednesdays each month, with their payment date determined by their birthday.
Today – Wednesday, May 14 – the SSA is due to issue retirement, SSDI and survivor pay to recipients born between the first and the 10th of each month.
This staggered distribution system then continues on the following two Wednesdays in May. The payment timeline is outlined in the table below:
Wednesday payment schedule – May 2025:
- Wednesday, May 14: beneficiaries born from 1st to 10th
- Wednesday, May 21: beneficiaries born from 11th to 20th
- Wednesday, May 28: beneficiaries born from 21st to 31st
Who gets Social Security checks outside the above system?
Beneficiaries who began claiming retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997 are typically issued their check on the third of each month, regardless of their birthday.
What’s more, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – a benefit for low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability – are normally paid on the first.
If you are a beneficiary of both SSI and one of the SSA’s retirement, SSDI or survivor programs, you generally get the former on the first and the latter on the third.
However: As May 3 was a Saturday, long-term and dual recipients were this month paid their retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits on the nearest working day before then: Friday 2nd.
You can check out the SSA’s complete payment calendar for 2025 on the agency’s website.
