Social Security is sending out payments of $2,000 on ave. on Wednesday, April 9: Find out who’s getting a check
Millions of Americans on Social Security retirement benefits are set to receive their next monthly check on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
That’s also the upcoming payment date for many recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits.
When are Social Security checks being paid out in April 2025?
Each month, many of the U.S.’s 65 million recipients of retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits are paid on one of three Wednesdays, as part of a staggered system that uses a person’s date of birth to decide when they get their money.
This month, the three-Wednesdays schedule begins on April 9, when payments are due to go out to recipients born between the first and the 10th of each month.
April 2025 – Wednesday payment dates:
- Wednesday, April 9: recipients born on 1st to 10th
- Wednesday, April 16: recipients born on 11th to 20th
- Wednesday, April 23: recipients born on 21st to 31st
Who gets Social Security outside of this timeline?
If you started receiving retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997, your check is issued on the third of the month, regardless of your birthday. In April, this group of recipients should have received their money on Thursday this week.
Another exception to the three-Wednesdays system is anyone who gets benefits under a separate scheme known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
SSI, a needs-based program which differs from the three schemes above as it does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes, is paid out to its 7.4 million recipients on the first of the month. In April, therefore, SSI checks were to be distributed last Tuesday.
If either of the above payment dates falls on a weekend or a holiday, they are moved forward to the nearest working day.
It’s also worth noting that some Americans receive both SSI and regular Social Security. Unless either day is a Saturday/Sunday/holiday, recipients get the former on the first and the latter on the third.
You can check out the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) full 2025 payment calendar on the agency’s website.
