Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures held steady after Dow's record-setting rally
US stock futures rose Monday evening after a sharp rally in equities earlier in the day, as investors largely brushed off geopolitical concerns tied to Venezuela and focused instead on potential economic upside for US companies.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures (YM=F) held steady, while futures attached to the S&P 500 climbed 0.1%. (ES=F) Nasdaq 100 futures (NQ=F) gained 0.3%.
The muted futures action followed a strong regular-session performance that pushed the Dow (^DJI) to a record close. During Monday’s session, the Dow jumped nearly 600 points, or about 1.2%. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) rose roughly 0.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) added nearly 0.7%, led by gains in large-cap growth names including Tesla (TSLA) and Amazon (AMZN).
Markets appeared to interpret the developments less as a source of global instability and more as a potential catalyst for US corporate opportunity, particularly in energy and defense. The reaction underscored investors’ continued appetite for risk as the new year gets underway.
Energy stocks outperformed after the White House confirmed that the Trump administration has held discussions with multiple US oil companies about Venezuela’s energy sector, though details were limited. Chevron (CVX), the only major US oil producer currently operating in Venezuela, surged 5.1%. Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Halliburton (HAL) also moved higher by 2.2% and 7.8% respectively, with gains of 0.2% and 0.4% made after-hours.
As stocks across the board are seeing belter starts to the year, AI companies are set to take investor focus with the CES marquee tech show in Las Vegas. That kicked off with Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang’s address, with speeches from AMD (AMD), Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM) due before the event wraps later this week.
Commodities reflected a more cautious undercurrent. Gold (GC=F) futures posted their strongest daily gain since October as some investors sought protection from volatility.
