U.S. stock futures advanced on Friday in the last trading day before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

S&P 500 futures gained 21 points, or 0.3%, to 5996.

On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 68 points, or 0.16%, to 43153, the S&P 500 declined 13 points, or 0.21%, to 5937, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 173 points, or 0.89%, to 19338.
Trump’s inauguration is on Monday, when the stock and bond markets will be closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
Stocks wobbled on Thursday after what’s been two days of largely positive earnings from banks as well as Taiwan Semiconductor, but also slower-than-expected retail sales. The Treasury secretary nominee, Scott Bessent, was vague about tariff plans in a hearing as he backed sanctions on Russia. The S&P 500 is up 3% compared to its election day close in November.
Friday’s earnings docket includes State Street, Regions Financial and Schlumberger, and the U.S. economics calendar includes data on housing starts and industrial production.
Overseas, U.K. bond turmoil eased following worse-than-expected retail sales data, while Chinese stocks edged higher China said its economy grew 5.4% in the fourth quarter.
