‘This economy literally broke us’: Murfreesboro cafe, open for 124 years, closes doors
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – A staple of Murfreesboro has officially closed its doors.
The City Cafe, which was open for nearly 125 years, officially closed on Thursday.
The cafe announced that its hearts were broken to make this announcement. The closure, they say, is due to the economy that, “Literally broke us.”
“It breaks our hearts to have to make this post but, this economy has literally broke us. We have tried so hard to stay ahead but, when you have more going out than coming in it catches up with you. I am sure that you all have your own opinions, ideas and comments about it but please all we need are your prayers. It’s hard to run a business and even harder when its a small business. We have poured our blood, sweat and tears into City Cafe because we love it. This has been our home away from home. She is a part of our family and we have worked hard to make her a part of yours. 124 years, That’s a lot of history. Our dreams and goals were to keep it in our family for another 124…No one can foresee the future and no one knew our economy would be in the situation it is in now. I hope this new administration can make our economy better. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to wait. I know we aren’t the only small business that has suffered and my heart truly goes out to those who have. We put our faith in God and he has seen us through and we praise him everyday for the blessings he has given us. I believe everything happens for a reason. A reason we may never know or understand. We have been blessed to get to know our community in ways we could not have without this Cafe. We have been blessed to get to know our employees throughout the years and create family bonds with them. We have been blessed to feel family bonds with our customers. Our Motto is…You come in as a stranger and you leave as family. We truly hope you have felt that love. We don’t know what is going to come of the Cafe from here. We want to truly Thank you all for your support during our time here.”
The cafe thanked patrons who came to have one last meal with them.
“We would like to let you know that we have not created any GoFundMe pages and are not working with anyone who may have.”
