Trump warns of ‘economic ruination’ for US if courts rule against tariffs
President Donald Trump believes the United States will plunge into “economic ruination” if his tariff plan is struck down permanently.
A federal court blocked his “Liberation Day” tariffs this week before an appeals court reinstated them the next day.
“If the Courts somehow rule against us on Tariffs, which is not expected, that would allow other Countries to hold our Nation hostage with their anti-American Tariffs that they would use against us,” he said in a Truth Social post. “This would mean the Economic ruination of the United States of America!”
Trump previously blamed the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group, for recommending him certain judges after a Trump appointee, along with a Reagan and Obama appointee, blocked the tariffs on the three-judge U.S. Court of International Trade panel.
“I am very proud of many of our picks, but very disappointed in others. They always must do what’s right for the Country! In this case, it is only because of my successful use of Tariffs that many Trillions of Dollars have already begun pouring into the U.S.A. from other Countries, money that, without these Tariffs, we would not be able to get,” he wrote in a Truth Social post this week.
“It is the difference between having a rich, prosperous, and successful United States of America, and quite the opposite. The ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade is so wrong, and so political! Hopefully, the Supreme Court will reverse this horrible, Country threatening decision, QUICKLY and DECISIVELY,” he added.
The court ruled that the law Trump had invoked to enact certain tariffs, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, does not “confer such unbounded authority” to presidents.
The White House had blasted the court for having “activist judges.”
“America cannot function if President Trump, or any other president, for that matter, has their sensitive diplomatic or trade negotiations railroaded by activist judges,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.

Trump is aiming to use the tariffs to generate new trade deals, encourage consumers to buy American goods, and take in more tariff revenue overall.
Opponents have argued that tariffs will only raise consumer prices and worsen relations with trade allies.
