OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has paused its flagship data centre project in the UK, citing an unfavourable regulatory climate and elevated energy costs. The move is a setback to the British government’s ambition to establish the country as a global AI hub.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI said on Thursday it would move ahead with the project once conditions are conducive to long-term, sustained investment.

The Stargate UK project, launched last September in collaboration with Nvidia and Nscale, coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Britain, which drew total inward investment commitments of 150 billion pounds ($201.14 billion).
