Washoe County Sheriff warns of new SMS scam targeting cryptocurrency users
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is warning the public about a new SMS scam targeting cryptocurrency users. Authorities say the text falsely claims to be from Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange. This scam involves unsolicited text messages that claim a withdrawal was requested to a user’s account, and asking the user to contact them in the event the action was unauthorized.
The fraudulent message often includes a withdrawal code as well as a reference and callback number, creating a sense of urgency to trick users into sharing sensitive information or contacting scammers directly.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office urges all cryptocurrency users to remain vigilant and protect their accounts from phishing attempts. If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from Coinbase, report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Fraud Awareness Hub and verify your account through official channels only.
For more information or to report a scam, you can contact Coinbase support directly through their official website or app.
