What is Disney’s stock price after the Jimmy Kimmel decision? The company’s market value is way down
Disney has been caught in the crossfire following ABC’s decision to suspend television host Jimmy Kimmel over comments he made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
What did Jimmy Kimmel say about Charlie Kirk?
Kimmel claimed that the MAGA movement was trying to gain political advantage following Kirk’s death. Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 during an event at Utah Valley University.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during his Monday monologue.
The 57-year-old then described Donald Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s death as “how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish.”
Backlash and support
Brendan Carr, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, called Kimmel’s comments “some of the sickest conduct possible” and threatened regulatory action against ABC and Disney.
However, Kimmel has received considerable backing from various sources, including other current and former late-night hosts, as well as ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner.
Across the United States, many people have responded to the suspension by canceling their Disney+ subscriptions in a show of support for free speech.
Impact on Disney stock
Disney’s stock price fell from $116.63 on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 17, the day Kimmel’s suspension was announced, to $112.22 on the morning of Monday, September 22, a decrease of almost 3.8 percent.
Although that in itself might not seem like a huge drop, Culture Base reported the company’s market value fell by $3.87 billion overnight in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
And some believe it won’t stop there, particularly if Disney ultimately decides to cancel, rather than just suspend, “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
“It’s going to go down a lot further if they cancel his show,” said Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo, a vocal Trump critic, on social media. “Disney does not want to be the ones that broke America.
