When do you get your Social Security payment for September? See schedule
Social Security payments for the month of September follow a normal schedule. But recipients who were previously overpaid by the Social Security Administration may need to take action to avoid smaller benefit checks.
Back in April, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced it would begin withholding 50% of a recipient’s monthly check to make up for any overpayment issued in the past. The agency began issuing overpayment notices on April 25, 2025 and would start withholding 50% of the recipient’s benefits after about 90 days (or approximately July 24, at the earliest), until the overpayment is repaid.
During those 90 days, anyone who gets a notice of overpayment can ask the SSA to reconsider, waive or change the repayment rate.

Social Security overpayments: How big of a problem?
An overpayment can happen when the SSA incorrectly calculates a person’s benefits or when a beneficiary fails to update a change in income.
Social Security paid out nearly $72 billion in improper payments – most made up by overpayments – during fiscal years 2015-2022, according to a report from the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, issued in August 2024.
Improper payments accounted for less than 1% of the almost $8.6 trillion in benefits paid during that 8-year period. As of September 2023, the agency had $23 billion in uncollected overpayments, according to the report.
