AMD's $1T Hit Makes These ETFs Worth Betting On
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has joined an elite group of U.S. chipmakers after its market capitalization crossed $1 trillion for the first time on Sept. 21, 2026. AMD shares rose 9.6% to $613.31 on that day, reaching a record high as investors renewed their focus on the company’s growing role in artificial intelligence (AI) computing.
The milestone came during a broader semiconductor rally. The AMD stock has now skyrocketed 185% so far in 2026. The move has made Advanced Micro Devices one of the strongest-performing large-cap semiconductor stocks this year.
AI Drives AMD’s Growth
The recent rally has been supported by strong underlying business growth, particularly in Advanced Micro Devices’ Data Center segment. AMD’s second-quarter 2026 Data Center revenues surged 107% year over year to $6.7 billion. The segment benefited from the demand for EPYC server processors and Instinct AI GPUs.
AMD is also moving beyond selling individual processors and GPUs toward complete AI infrastructure. Its Helios rack-scale platform combines GPUs, CPUs, networking and software, giving Advanced Micro Devices a broader product offering as it competes with Nvidia in AI data centers. AMD has announced deployments and collaborations involving major technology companies and AI customers.
Advanced Micro Devices’ AI opportunity is therefore increasingly tied to the expansion of data-center infrastructure rather than just traditional PC and gaming chip demand.
AMD’s Rally Can Extend Beyond Itself
The significance of AMD’s move goes beyond the company itself. Strong demand for AI accelerators, server CPUs, networking equipment and data-center infrastructure can benefit a broader group of semiconductor companies.
Advanced Micro Devices’ second-quarter 2026 results provide evidence of this broader opportunity. Its Data Center revenues were $6.7 billion. The company reported $2.1 billion in Data Center operating income against a loss in the year-earlier period.
The broader semiconductor rally also illustrates this spillover effect. On Sept. 21, Intel jumped about 12%, while Qualcomm gained 9.3%, helping lift the semiconductor index sharply.
This means that Advanced Micro Devices’ momentum can contribute not only to the performance of AMD-heavy ETFs but also to broader strength across the semiconductor market. By considering semiconductor ETFs, alongside AMD-heavy funds, investors can gain exposure to AMD and other potential beneficiaries of continued AI infrastructure spending.
