Later this week, certain recipients of Social Security benefits in the U.S. are due to get their latest monthly payment – slightly earlier than usual.
On Friday, October 2, Social Security is to be sent out to two groups of beneficiaries, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) begins next month’s payment schedule for the benefits program.
Who receives Social Security on Friday, October 2?
- Certain long-standing beneficiaries
October’s Social Security is to be issued to beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997.
- Double beneficiaries: Social Security + SSI
Friday 2 is also October’s Social Security payment date for beneficiaries who are concurrently signed up to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme.
A program for certain low-income, low-resource Americans, SSI differs from Social Security as it is needs-based. Eligibility is not dependent on a claimant’s work history.
A benefit worth an average of $738.73 per month, according to the SSA’s latest figures, SSI is scheduled to be issued for October on Thursday 1.
Why October 2’s Social Security payment early?
The two groups of recipients above are typically paid their Social Security on the third of each month. However, as October 3 is a non-working day, the SSA has brought next month’s payment date forward by 24 hours.

When will the SSA announce the 2027 COLA?
The SSA is due to confirm its annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, October 14. A measure that seeks to ensure Social Security and SSI benefits keep pace with inflation, the agency’s latest adjustment is expected to bring a 3.5% increase in monthly payments, per a projection by the Senior Citizens League.
The upcoming COLA will be applied to Social Security and SSI payments from January 2027.

What other Social Security payment dates does October 2026 have?
Of the just over 71 million Social Security beneficiaries in the U.S., many will receive their October payment on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in the month, depending on their birthday:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: benefits paid on Wednesday, October 14
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: benefits paid on Wednesday, October 21
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: benefits paid on Wednesday, October 28
NB: If you claim Social Security based on someone else’s work history, the SSA uses the other person’s birthday.
How does the Social Security Admin pay benefits?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank details using the online “my Social Security” tool.
- Direct Express
Monthly money can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for recipients who do not have a bank account. Sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
