Here’s What the Average Social Security Payment Will Be in Winter 2026
Every year, retirees who receive Social Security benefits await the announcement of the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to determine their monthly payment and plan their budgets accordingly. While retirees’ expenses often remain relatively fixed, with inflation on an upswing the past few years, even the most predictable expenses have risen, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
The last few years have been on an inflationary incline, as well, meaning that a smaller than expected COLA may not make a huge dent in a retirees’ budget. The 2026 COLA was only 2.8%, which can seem small compared to some of the pandemic era COLAs (the highest was 8.7% in 2022), though there are years on record where there was no COLA at all.
The 2027 COLA Announcement Has Arrived
On Oct. 14, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced its COLA for 2027, cueing retirees in to a 3.6% benefit increase. With that in mind, some may be wondering when this pay increase takes effect.
The Average Social Security Payment Stays the Same Through December
Through the end of December 2026, the average Social Security payment will remain at around $2,084, where it stands now.
As retirees await the now formally announced 2027 COLA increase, they can start to plan ahead accordingly. According to the SSA website, a 3.6% COLA bump in 2027 raises the average benefit by about $75 per month to around $2,159 per month.
It’s important to remember that the average benefit amount is just that — an average. It doesn’t account for specifics. Many people’s actual benefits may be smaller or larger depending on many factors.
