If ever the saying that the market can go remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent applied, now would be that time, especially for the bears.
With the S&P 500 within touching distance of 4,900 by the close of last week, it’s now within spitting distance of 5,000, a figure that seemed so far out of reach just a year or so ago when it was close to 3,500,
At an annual conference some years ago, a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder asked Warren Buffett how it was possible for smaller investors to rival his own performance and track record during the 1960s, which was his best period. He corrected the questioner and commented that, in fact, his best years were prior to that in the 1950s when he averaged gains closer to 50% annually.
Warren Buffett described major selloffs in the market as times when it rains gold because the opportunity to make enormous sums of money is everywhere. He further goes on to say that unfortunately those times only come alone maybe once per decade so when they do you need to be ready to pounce in a big way.
Third Point, founded by Dan Loeb, is no ordinary investment manager. It’s got $6.5 billion in assets under management and so when it makes a move it’s worth paying attention because you know the company has passed a lot of screens to be accepted into the portfolio.
But perhaps even more interesting is what stock in the portfolio ranks as the most undervalued of all and whether it’s a buy?
