NEW YORK :Major stock indexes edged lower on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 easing after recent record highs, and investors eyeing political upheaval in France, Japan and a U.S. government shutdown, while gold futures hit $4,000 an ounce for the first time.
Tesla stock was down 0.7% in early trading at $450.11, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were flat.
Shares of the EV maker gained 5.4% on Monday, partly in anticipation of the teased Oct. 7 event.
Tesla shares were on fire long before a couple of cryptic tweets.

But outside of promising a relief package for farmers, and agreeing to exempt big companies promising investments in the US from tariffs, the Trump administration has shown little concern about the risks of its approach to trade.
Asked by NBC News in May about the possibility of relief for small businesses Trump said: “They’re not going to need it.”

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are scheduled to meet at the White House on Tuesday amid the trade war between the neighboring nations.
In July, Trump issued a 35% tariff on most goods and raw materials from Canada.
Canada originally issued retaliatory tariffs. However, in August,
Wall Street closed mixed on Monday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq closing at record highs as investors’ sentiment got a boost from the announcement of two major acquisitions and merger deals despite the U.S. government shutdown entering its second week.
While Washington fights a record government shutdown, some investors are looking under the radar at the health-care ETF arena for any signs of movement.
