The stock market fell again on Wednesday after the Federal Open Market Committee kept interest-rates steady at its July meeting.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 172 points, or 0.4%. The S&P 500 was down 0.1%. The Nasdaq Composite rose nearly 0.2%.
Shares of retailers and copper miners slipped around the Fed’s decision after President Donald Trump shared details regarding orders to suspend the de minimis exemption for commercial shipments globally and put 50% tariffs on imports of semi-finished copper products.

S&P 500 edged down by 0.1 per cent, coming off its first loss after setting all-time highs for six successive days. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 171 points, or 0.4 per cent, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 per cent. S&P 500 slipped 7.96 points to 6,362.90. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq 100 futures rose on Wednesday night following solid earnings reports from tech titans Microsoft and Meta Platforms.
S&P 500 futures jumped 0.7%, and Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 1%. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 76 points, or about 0.2%.
In one of the sharpest non-recession rallies in 20 years, the S&P 500 has surged as much as 32% off of the April 2025 lows, when tariff-induced panic nearly pushed it into bear market territory. Now trading just beneath the all-time highs reached on Tuesday, the benchmark U.S. equity index is well on pace for its 11th consecutive positive close in July–a month that has historically delivered positive returns on average.
