[1 Stock per Day #297] Tesla (TSLA): The Harsh Structural Transformation from Cars to 'Physical AI & Robotics' and the Gap in Valuation
Hello, this is Hal.
In this note, I analyze one US stock per day.
The stock I am covering this time is Tesla [TSLA] (hereinafter referred to as Tesla), which is shifting its focus entirely from an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to a ‘physical AI platform company’ that develops Full Self-Driving (FSD), humanoid robots, and massive AI infrastructure.
Article perspective and reasons for attention (Why this stock, Why now?)
This is because in the Q3 2026 earnings report (July-September 2026), the notable ‘automotive gross margin (excluding credits)’ recovered to 18.1% and FCF turned positive, while the sharp increase in operating expenses associated with AI development pressured profits. As AI vision progresses, such as the start of Cybercab commercial operations, I decided to cover this now because it is a timely moment to objectively evaluate the business reality of whether an overwhelming ‘AI premium’ with a forward P/E ratio of over 300x can be maintained.
[What kind of company is it?]
Beyond selling EVs like the ‘Model Y,’ it develops FSD (Full Self-Driving) software, charging networks, and stationary storage batteries (Megapack) through vertical integration. While its competitor BYD is expanding its market share through mass exports of low-priced EVs, Tesla is characterized by having an ‘ecosystem beyond manufacturing’ that handles everything from building its own AI data centers (Terafab, etc.) to unmanned commercial vehicle operations (TaaS) on its own.
[Recent earnings summary and analysis]
Revenue: $28.046 billion (down 0.2% year-on-year), which was generally in line with market consensus estimates.
Non-GAAP EPS (Earnings Per Share): $0.48 (down 4.0% year-on-year), which exceeded the market expectation of $0.45.
Full-year guidance: The capital expenditure (CapEx) outlook for the full year 2026 was revised downward from the previous ‘over $25 billion’ to ‘approximately $20 billion.’ This implies that the timeline for mass production and infrastructure construction for AI and new products (such as Optimus) is slightly behind schedule compared to initial expectations.
Hal’s ‘Short Insight’:
The most important point to read from the earnings figures is that the core automotive gross margin (excluding credits) has recovered to 18.1%, and the gross margin of the energy division (Megapack) has also surged to 33.1%, indicating that the product profitability is extremely robust. However, because R&D expenses for AI compute surged by 69% year-on-year ($2.76 billion), operating profit fell by 56% year-on-year ($718 million). The reason the stock price fell in after-hours trading following the earnings announcement is that the market interpreted the ‘delay in Optimus mass production (external delivery around the end of 2027)’ and the reduction in CapEx as negative signals, analyzing that it lacks the sense of speed appropriate for its high valuation.
In the following [Detailed Analysis], I will delve into three themes that can be deciphered from the data in this earnings report: ‘The pressure of upfront AI investment and the future of FCF,’ ‘Profit margins boosted by FSD and the energy business,’ and ‘The fierce pursuit by Chinese competitors (BYD) and the justification of valuation.’ I will also share Hal’s recommendation level and investment strategy.

[Detailed Analysis] Harsh investment in AI infrastructure and the blooming of software revenue
I will delve into the macro and micro factors that shape the company today while incorporating specific figures.
Huge upfront investment in AI/robotics and the future of FCF
Research and development (R&D) expenses for autonomous driving data centers and robotics development surged by 69% year-on-year to $2.761 billion, significantly pushing down the operating margin to 2.6%. While the company secured a free cash flow (FCF) surplus of $1.53 billion in the third quarter due to a temporary decrease in capital expenditures, it may fall back into an FCF deficit if the remaining balance (approximately $6.9 billion) of the revised full-year plan (approximately $20 billion) is executed in the fourth quarter, objectively confirming the heavy financial burden during this structural transition period toward AI.
Rapid Growth in FSD Attachment Rates and Higher Profitability in the Energy Business
In the North American market, the attachment rate of FSD (Full Self-Driving) has reached over 75% of new vehicle deliveries, increasing the composition of high-margin software revenue. Additionally, the energy storage business (Megapack, etc.) saw its gross margin jump dramatically from 20.4% in the previous quarter to 33.1%, partly due to the effect of in-house LFP cell production. It can be analyzed that the business model of compensating for hardware price competition with software and infrastructure profits is functioning.
The Fierce Pursuit by Chinese Competitors (BYD) and the Justification of Valuation
As global EV growth slows, BYD sold 762,000 pure BEVs alone in the third quarter, far outpacing Tesla (486,000 units). Despite having a profit per vehicle (approximately $2,140) similar to Toyota, Tesla is trading at a forward P/E ratio of over 300x, which is characterized by the market strongly pricing in ‘future cash flows beyond manufacturing,’ such as the commercialization of autonomous driving (Robotaxi) and humanoid robots.
[Hal’s View] Recommendation Level and Investment Judgment
Recommendation Level: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆ (5/10 scale)
While the improvement in profit margins for FSD and the energy business, along with $45.4 billion in abundant cash on hand, are strong, the trailing P/E ratio is at a historical premium level exceeding 300x. Considering the risk of delays in the commercialization of AI and robotics, it can be considered that this level is appropriate.
Positive Factors
-
Bottoming out of automotive gross margins and higher profitability in the energy sector: With the easing of discount pressure, the automotive gross margin (excluding credits) recovered to 18.1%, and the energy sector, including Megapack, has grown into a second pillar with a gross margin of 33.1%.
-
FSD penetration and the start of commercial Robotaxi operations: With the track record of over 75% FSD attachment in North America and the start of Cybercab commercial operations in Texas, monetization from autonomous driving (LTV improvement) has entered a real phase.
-
Solid balance sheet and liquidity buffer: With an equity ratio of 56.7% and approximately $45.45 billion in cash on hand, the company has the financial strength to complete massive investments in AI mega-fabs (Terafab, etc.) with its own funds, even in a high-interest-rate environment.
Points of Caution
-
Continuous pressure on profit margins due to massive upfront investment: R&D and capital expenditures for AI and robotics are expanding, and the risk of sluggish operating margins (currently 2.6%) and FCF deficits will continue until new products are monetized.
-
Risk of delays in the commercialization of Optimus and next-generation products: As management pushed back the mass production timing of Optimus to around the end of 2027 and revised down full-year CapEx, the mass production of innovative hardware carries execution risks (delays).
-
Risk of the extremely high ‘AI premium’ eroding: With a forward P/E ratio nearly 10 times the market average (over 300x), there is a concern that valuations could be adjusted sharply if there are delays in FSD approval by regulatory authorities or observations of a slowdown in AI investment.
[Signpost] Investment Strategy as a Logical Proposal
In conclusion, ‘while highly evaluating the structural transformation from a mere EV manufacturer to a physical AI platform, we remain cautious about the historical high valuation and the pressure of upfront investment, avoiding short-term lump-sum investments, waiting for adjustment phases due to macro factors or regulatory news, and seeking to enter with time diversification as a satellite holding’ is considered a logical approach.
Tips for Readers (Signpost)
The upside relative to the current average analyst target price (approximately $408–$416) is limited to about 9%, and a lump-sum investment at a trailing P/E ratio of over 300x does not offer a favorable risk-reward profile. It is considered reasonable to use a dollar-cost averaging approach to accumulate shares gradually with a long-term holding perspective, specifically by taking advantage of dips where the stock price is unfairly sold down to support levels such as the 50-day and 200-day moving average zones ($355–$365) due to FSD-related regulatory news or fluctuations in monthly sales figures.
-
Next Points of Focus
In upcoming quarterly earnings, it is necessary to focus on whether the automotive segment’s gross margin (18.1%) is being maintained, even if CapEx (capital expenditure) surges in the fourth quarter and FCF falls into the red, while simultaneously monitoring whether FSD regulatory approvals outside of North America (Europe, China, etc.) are proceeding as planned and if software revenue is expanding.
Tesla is currently in a harsh phase of upfront investment, moving from a phase of chasing car sales volume to one of dominating ‘mobility and energy platforms’ through autonomous driving and AI infrastructure. Rather than being rattled by short-term FCF deficits or noise regarding delays in Optimus development, it is important to calmly continue evaluating how the company is accumulating FSD driving data and generating stable profits in its energy business based on objective data.
The ‘physical AI’ business structure that Tesla is tackling, having overcome the ‘production hell’ of hardware, can be considered something that will bring discontinuous returns to long-term investors after digesting the massive investments and valuation adjustments of this transitional period.
That is all from Hal.
