#22 Six Months Since Starting Point Investing
Small and steady investment habits
Points that accumulate little by little through everyday shopping and the like. To me, those points are also one of my valuable assets.
Currently, I am investing only points in one securities account.
‘Every little bit helps’
—I am investing steadily, believing that it will eventually add up.
This time, I would like to write about my small investment habits.
The reason I started point investing
I started point investing in April 2026.
The trigger was an investor open chat and an investor meetup. There, I heard stories from people who were actually doing point investing.
Simply put, you use the points you’ve saved from everyday shopping for investments. It’s just that, but I hadn’t done it before because it seemed like a hassle.
For me, as someone building assets primarily through index investing, if I could invest with points, I wanted to try it. So, I decided to give it a try for now.
Ponta points and JAL miles
I use SBI Securities for my point investing. I use it as a securities account exclusively for point investing.
I use Ponta points saved from everyday shopping to invest. These are points that accumulate little by little in daily life, such as at supermarkets and convenience stores.
And one more thing. I also exchange JAL miles that are nearing their expiration date into Ponta points and invest them. It would be a waste to let the miles I’ve worked so hard to save just expire. I figured it would be better to exchange them for points and put them into investments.
By the way, I have not deposited any cash into this SBI Securities account. I am managing it purely with points.
My rules
When it comes to point investing, I have set three rules for myself.
1. Invest only with points
I do not deposit cash; I only invest using Ponta points. I utilize points earned from everyday shopping and points exchanged from JAL miles.
2. Invest in the S&P 500
My only investment target is the S&P 500. I keep things simple without increasing the number of investment targets here and there.
3. Invest immediately once 100 points or more are accumulated
Once I have 100 points or more, I mechanically purchase each time. I don’t wait too long for points to accumulate, but rather invest steadily.
These three are my personal rules. I’m not doing anything special, but having rules in place might be why I can continue without getting lost.
Basically, leave it alone
Leaving index funds alone suits me. In particular, I do not log in very often to SBI Securities, which I use exclusively for point investing.
Since I keep it separate from my regular asset management, I only log in occasionally to check the investment status. Such a relaxed way of engaging might be what suits me right now.
When investing in individual stocks, I sometimes find myself concerned about daily price fluctuations. However, I don’t worry about point investing at all.
Partly because the investment amount is still small, to begin with.
Continuing to invest steadily
It has been about half a year since I started point investing. At the moment, I am not seeing any significant investment gains. Even so, I have been able to hold over 10,000 yen in investment trusts using only points.
In the future, the market may crash or surge. Even so, I want to continue long-term without being swayed by short-term price movements.
Ponta points earned from daily shopping. JAL miles nearing their expiration date. I plan to continue point investing steadily while utilizing such familiar things.
How much will my assets be in a few years?
I want to keep a relaxed record of it.
