AI Stocks Rebound. NASDAQ +2.13%, What Happened When Interest Rates Fell Below 5%? [Learn Investing in 2 Minutes Every Morning] | September 22
Good morning. This is Reiji Kamiya.
Today, let’s look at **”What you need to know this morning” + “One investment tip”** together.
In yesterday’s morning paper, we talked about looking at the US 10-year interest rate of 5% and AI stocks together.
And last night, those two moved simultaneously.
The US 10-year Treasury yield fell below 5%, and oil prices also dropped.
On the other hand, AI and semiconductor stocks saw buying, and the NASDAQ rose significantly.
Today, we will look at this connection.
☕ That’s all for this morning!
The US market rose across all three major indices last night.
NY Dow +0.61%
S&P 500 +1.44%
NASDAQ +2.13%
The rise in the NASDAQ was particularly notable.
There were two main factors behind this.
1. The US 10-year Treasury yield fell below 5%
2. Oil prices dropped significantly
Brent crude fell below $100, reaching its lowest level since September 9.
In other words, last night followed the trend of

📈 AI and semiconductor stocks were strong
Semiconductor stocks rose significantly last night.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index was **+3.7%**.
Intel and Arm rose by over 12%, and AMD was also heavily bought, briefly reaching a market capitalization of $1 trillion.
There were moments last week when AI-related stocks were sold off.
But entering this week, the view that
“investment in AI is still continuing”
is being reconsidered.
Here, too, what is important is not just looking at AI stocks, but looking at them together with interest rates.
🎓 One investment tip to learn today
Even with the same “5%,” the meaning changes depending on whether you look at it from above or below
Until yesterday, I talked about how the 5% US 10-year Treasury yield is a major point.
However,
when it is rising above 5%
and when it is falling below 5%,
the market’s perception is different.
Interest rates rise
↓
Tends to be a burden on stocks
Interest rates fall
↓
Tends to be a tailwind for stocks
Growth stocks, especially in AI and high-tech, are considered to be particularly sensitive to interest rates.
Last night, we were able to see exactly that movement: falling interest rates → rising AI stocks
.
💡 Why is it positive for stocks when crude oil falls?
When crude oil prices fall, the energy burden on companies and households lightens.
Furthermore,
crude oil prices fall
↓
caution regarding inflation eases slightly
↓
caution regarding rising interest rates also eases
is also a flow to keep in mind.
Last night, with both crude oil and interest rates falling, the factors that were a burden on the stock market eased slightly.
The connection we have been watching since last week—
crude oil → inflation → interest rates → stocks
—has emerged once again.
🧭 What to watch starting today?
There are three things today.
① US 10-year Treasury yield
Will it continue to stay below 5%?
② AI/semiconductor stocks
Will yesterday’s gains continue? Or will there be profit-taking again?
③ Comments from Fed officials
At least 10 Fed officials are scheduled to speak this week.
The market is also mindful of the possibility of another interest rate hike at the next meeting.
Therefore,

📌 Quick note
In yesterday’s article, I wrote, “Let’s watch the 5% interest rate and AI stocks together.”
And last night,
interest rates fell below 5%
↓
AI and semiconductor stocks rose
↓
NASDAQ +2.13%
was the movement we saw.
Of course, it doesn’t always move this cleanly every time.
However, by connecting the news every day, you will gradually start to see ‘why stocks moved’.
Don’t just look at one day and finish; connect yesterday’s news with today’s market.
This is what I want to do together in the morning paper.
Well then, have a great day today.
