Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq close sharply higher as tech stocks rally
Wall Street needed a reason to stop selling, and Dell Technologies handed it one. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite all closed higher on September 2, breaking a three-session skid that had rattled investor confidence heading into the holiday-shortened stretch.
The numbers tell a clean story: the Dow closed at 53,061.95, up 295.07 points or 0.56%. The S&P 500 settled at 7,666.60, a gain of 35.13 points or 0.46%. The Nasdaq added 118.05 points to finish at 26,217.83, up 0.45%.
Dell leads, Nvidia follows
Dell Technologies was the session’s loudest headline, with its stock surging nearly 16% after the company raised its full-year revenue forecasts. Nvidia climbed more than 3%, reinforcing the same thesis. Micron Technology added 2.4%, rounding out a broader push across the semiconductor space.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also posted gains, reflecting that this wasn’t a one-stock story.
What actually drove the bounce
The macro backdrop was more complicated. Treasury yields remained elevated, and oil prices stayed firm, creating the kind of environment that typically pressures growth stocks. The fact that tech managed to rally despite those headwinds says something about how strong the earnings signal was.
