Investing $50 a month may not sound like much, but personal finance creator Humphrey Yang says it could grow to about $75,000 over 30 years. More importantly, he says starting small can turn someone who has never invested before into an investor.
Yang recently broke monthly investing into four tiers, starting at $50 and climbing all the way to $2,000. The first level, he said in a video, is “very achievable.” Investing $50 a month works out to just $600 a year, and while Yang acknowledged that “it won’t retire you,” he said the habit itself matters. “This tier is really important because it’s the one that makes you an investor.”
Don’t Miss:
Small Contributions Can Add Up
The second tier is $200 a month, which Yang said represents roughly 4% to 5% of the median U.S. salary. Over 30 years, an investor would contribute $72,000. Yang estimates that money could compound to around $300,000.
At $500 a month, the numbers become considerably larger. Yang estimates someone investing that amount consistently for 30 years could end up with about $745,000.
“For most people, this is going to be enough because if you add in Social Security, you actually have a full retirement,” he said. “It’s not a dream retirement by any means, but it does get the job done.”
Starting small can also make it easier to explore different types of investments as more money becomes available. Skybound Entertainment, the company behind successful TV shows “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible,” has opened investment to the public with shares starting at $12.50.
The company reports a $700 million valuation and more than 7,000 shareholders to date, with a minimum investment of $1,000. With a track record 20 years in the making, Skybound says its momentum is continuing and interested investors can own a piece of what’s next.

The Biggest Tier Could Result In Millions
Yang’s fourth tier is a much bigger jump: $2,000 a month. He estimates that consistently investing that amount could result in a balance of more than $3 million after 30 years.
Using a 4% withdrawal rate, Yang said a portfolio of that size could provide roughly $120,000 a year without working, which he described as “ultimate financial freedom.”
But the point isn’t that everyone should immediately find $2,000 a month to invest. Yang stressed that people can move between the tiers as their financial situations change.
“Nobody stays in just one tier,” he said in the video. “As you make more money, you can invest more and more.”
The point is, you don’t need a lot of money to get started. Even $50 a month gets you investing, and you can always put in more later as you earn more.
