Live updates: House will recess early; Federal Reserve board set to announce interest rates
House Republican leaders are cutting short the final legislative week before the midterm elections, announcing Wednesday that lawmakers will leave Washington after votes.
The move not only allows lawmakers to head home early for the campaign trail. It also means that lawmakers will not be forced to take a vote on impeaching Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth before the elections.
The Federal Reserve board will address interest rates Wednesday afternoon. The central bank is expected to hike its rates amid rising inflation and the growing economic toll of the Iran war.

President Trump will rejoin the campaign trail Wednesday evening, traveling to North Carolina to rally support for GOP Senate candidate Michael Whatley, who formerly chaired the Republican National Committee. Recent polls placed the Republican hopeful behind his Democratic opponent, former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
The Senate health panel spoke Wednesday morning with several nominees Trump tapped for leadership roles across federal public health regulatory agencies, including Nicole Saphier, the president’s third nominee for surgeon general.
