Live updates: US-Canada trade war details surface; Trump to take honor lap in IndyCar Grand Prix
The details of the failed trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada, which sparked tit-for-tat 50 percent tariffs on certain goods between the two countries, are now coming to light.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a Saturday evening interview with The New York Times that, before this weekend, officials had offered to reduce existing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and cars. He added that the U.S. had also offered to completely eliminate a tax on softwood lumber.
“Obviously, we would completely suspend the 50 percent Section 338 tariffs that we were going to apply to 5 percent of Canadian exports,” Greer told the Times, explaining what would have happen had Canada agreed to the other stipulations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday he planned to match the U.S.’s new 50 percent tariff “dollar for dollar,” though he has not yet elaborated on the details of these policies. Meanwhile, some lawmakers have called for negotiations to resume before Canada’s tariffs takes effect on Sept. 8.
President Trump early Sunday morning appeared to address Canada’s threat of retaliatory levies. In a Truth Social post, he accused the U.S.’s northern neighbor of wanting “the benefits of being a State, without being one,” in a nod to his previous comments floating Canada as the 51st state.
The president is set to take a ceremonial lap alongside first lady Melania Trump on Sunday during the America 250 IndyCar Grand Prix in Washington D.C.
