MATSUI Bank savings account interest rate rises to 0.85% APR. Who is eligible? Calculating interest for 1 million, 5 million, and 10 million yen
The interest rate on savings accounts is rising again.
Starting October 1, 2026, MATSUI Bank will increase the interest rate on yen savings accounts to:
Regular
0.61% APR
Gold
0.72% APR
Platinum
0.85% APR
respectively.
The maximum rate of 0.85% is 0.677% APR after tax. MATSUI Bank claims this is among the highest in the industry.
However,
not everyone will receive 0.85%.
“Is it 0.85% if I deposit 10 million yen?”
“How much interest will I get for 1 million yen?”
“Is it really 0.85% for 3 months for new accounts?”
We will clarify these points.
1. What will the rates be starting October 1?
The new interest rates are as follows:
Rank | Main Conditions | Starting October 1
Platinum | Eligible securities balance of 10 million yen or more | 0.85% APR
Gold | Eligible securities balance of 1 million yen or more | 0.72% APR
Regular | Eligible securities balance of less than 1 million yen | 0.61% APR
All rates are before tax.
Currently, they are:
0.75%
0.62%
0.51%
Therefore, for all 3 ranks,
+0.10 percentage points
will be added.
2. It is not “0.85% for 10 million yen in ordinary savings”
This point is especially important.
The 10 million yen or 1 million yen that determines your rank
is not your deposit balance at MATSUI Bank.
In principle,
it is the balance of eligible securities in your Matsui Securities account.
It includes,
Japanese stocks,
US stocks,
investment trusts,
and so on.
For Japanese and US stocks, both cash and margin positions are eligible, while for investment trusts, iDeCo and foreign currency MMFs are excluded.
For example,
if you have 10 million yen in deposits at MATSUI Bank + 0 yen in eligible securities at Matsui Securities,
then normally,
it is Regular = 0.61% per annum.
Conversely,
If you have 1 million yen in MATSUI Bank deposits
+ 10 million yen or more in eligible securities at Matsui Securities
, then
the rate will be 0.85% per annum
.
3. When is the rank determined?
Securities balances are
determined on the final business day of each month
.
And the results are reflected
starting from the first day of the month after next.
For example, if your eligible securities balance is 10 million yen or more as of August 31st,
you will reach Platinum Rank starting October 1st
.
Therefore,
“I reached 10 million yen today, so it will be 0.85% starting tomorrow”
is not how it works.
4. For new accounts, you get 0.85% even with a zero securities balance
A very straightforward benefit this time is the
new account opening benefit
.
When you open a new MATSUI Bank account, regardless of your securities balance, you will
attain Platinum rank
.
In other words, from October onwards, it will be
0.85% per annum
.
The application period is
from the account opening date until the end of the month two months later.
For example, if you open it on October 1st, it will be
from October 1st to December 31st
, so it is almost 3 months.
On the other hand, if you open it on October 20th, it will be
from October 20th to December 31st
.
Therefore, the official notation is
“up to 3 months”
.
5. If you receive your salary, it goes from 0.61% to 0.72%
Even if your eligible securities balance at Matsui Securities is less than 1 million yen,
if you set MATSUI Bank as your salary receipt account,
Regular
0.61%
to,
Gold
0.72%
you can upgrade to.
However, the rate does not become 0.72% the moment your salary is deposited.
For the month in which a salary or bonus is deposited,
starting from the first day of the month after next
the Gold rate will be applied.
Also, in your transaction history,
“Salary”
or
“Bonus”
deposits labeled as such are eligible.
Even if the deposit is from your employer, if it is simply treated as a “transfer,” it is not eligible.
6. How much interest will you earn if you deposit 1 million yen?
Let’s calculate it.
The following is
an estimate assuming the same balance for one full year
and that the interest rate does not change for one year.
This is an approximation.
Currently, a 20.315% tax is withheld from deposit interest.
For 1 million yen:
Regular 0.61%
Before tax 6,100 yen
After tax approx. 4,861 yen
Gold 0.72%
Before tax 7,200 yen
After tax approx. 5,737 yen
Platinum 0.85%
Before tax 8,500 yen
After tax approx. 6,773 yen
This is the result.
7. What about 5 million yen?
If you deposit 5 million yen for one year under the same conditions:
Interest Rate | Pre-tax Interest | Estimated After-tax
0.61% 30,500 yen approx. 24,304 yen
0.72% 36,000 yen approx. 28,687 yen
0.85% 42,500 yen approx. 33,866 yen
With Platinum:
Approximately 33,900 yen per year after tax
is the model.
8. What about 10 million yen?
With 10 million yen, the difference becomes even larger.
Interest Rate | Pre-tax Interest | Estimated After-tax
0.61% 61,000 yen approx. 48,608 yen
0.72% 72,000 yen approx. 57,373 yen
0.85% 85,000 yen approx. 67,732 yen
At 0.85% per year:
85,000 yen before tax
and after tax,
Approximately 67,700 yen
.
However, to reiterate,
it is not the case that “you get 0.85% because you deposited 10 million yen.”
This table is a calculation assuming that each rank is already applied.
9. How much will increase with this interest rate hike?
This revision is for all ranks,
+0.10 percentage points
.
Therefore, for the same balance, the increase in annual pre-tax interest is simply calculated as follows:
1 million yen
→ +1,000 yen
5 million yen
→ +5,000 yen
10 million yen
→ +10,000 yen
.
After taxes, it is generally:
1 million yen
→ approx. 797 yen increase
5 million yen
→ approx. 3,984 yen increase
10 million yen
→ approx. 7,969 yen increase
.
Since it is a savings account, it is not a large investment return, but for funds left on deposit, you can receive the benefits of the interest rate hike as is.
10. What if you deposit 1 million yen in a new account for 3 months?
Suppose you open a new account on October 1st and deposit 1 million yen.
Due to the new account benefit,
the rate is 0.85% APR from October to December.
Simply calculating for 3 months,
1 million yen × 0.85% × 3/12
=
approximately 2,125 yen before tax
is the result.
After tax, the estimate is approximately
1,690 yen
.
However, actual interest is calculated based on the daily closing balance, and the savings account interest rate is a variable rate. MATSUI Bank’s savings account interest is calculated on daily closing balances of 1,000 yen or more, and interest is credited on a designated day each month.
11. “Investing 10 million yen for 0.85%” is a separate issue
The difference between 0.61% and 0.85% is
0.24 percentage points
.
For example, if you have 1 million yen in a savings account, the difference in annual interest before tax is
8,500 yen – 6,100 yen
=2,400 yen
is.
On the other hand, to obtain 0.85% through the standard route, you must hold 10 million yen or more in eligible securities.
Stocks and investment trusts are subject to price fluctuations.
Therefore,
whether or not to increase your securities balance solely for the purpose of raising your deposit interest rate by 0.24 percentage points
is a separate decision.
The meaning is significantly different for someone who is already managing 10 million yen or more at Matsui Securities versus someone who is investing anew just for the deposit interest rate.
12. Can anyone just open a MATSUI Bank account?
MATSUI Bank is a
banking service for Matsui Securities users
is.
The bank itself is
Docomo SMTB Net Bank,
and Matsui Securities provides the service as a bank agent.
To apply for MATSUI Bank, you must
have a general Matsui Securities account
or
apply for a MATSUI Bank account and a Matsui Securities account at the same time.
It is not a service where you can open just a bank account independently of Matsui Securities.
It is not a service where you can open just a bank account independently of Matsui Securities.
13. Is the deposited money covered by deposit insurance?
Ordinary savings accounts that earn interest fall under general deposits in the deposit insurance system, and
up to 10 million yen in principal per person per financial institution plus interest accrued up to the date of bankruptcy
are protected.
Another point to note here is that
the bank to which MATSUI Bank belongs is
Docomo SMTB Net Bank
is the point.
Since deposit insurance is determined by “financial institution” rather than “account,” if you have other protected deposits within the same bank, you must consider them in total.
14. Will the 0.85% APR last forever?
It is not a guaranteed fixed interest rate.
MATSUI Bank’s yen ordinary savings account is
a variable interest rate
account.
Docomo SMTB Net Bank also clearly states that it may review interest rate levels due to changes in financial conditions, etc.
Therefore,
“85,000 yen every year for 10 million yen”
is not guaranteed.
The interest table provided this time is
based on the assumption that the currently announced interest rate continues for one year
is a rough estimate.
15. Ultimately, who is most affected?
This revision is especially beneficial for:
People who already use Matsui Securities
People with a target securities balance of 1 million yen or more
People with a target securities balance of 10 million yen or more
as it offers the clear benefit of an increased ordinary deposit interest rate without requiring additional investment actions.
Also,
people who will open a MATSUI Bank account from now on
get Platinum status for up to 3 months regardless of their securities balance.
Even if the target securities balance is less than 1 million yen,
those who can use it as a salary receipt account
can aim for the Gold rate of 0.72%.
On the other hand, if you are choosing an account based solely on the maximum interest rate,
account opening conditions
the period for which the interest rate applies
deposit insurance
usability such as ATMs and transfers
should also be checked.
Summary
MATSUI Bank will raise its yen ordinary deposit interest rate starting October 1, 2026.
Regular
0.51% → 0.61%
Gold
0.62% → 0.72%
Platinum
0.75% → 0.85%
is the new rate.
The standard condition to reach the maximum 0.85% is
having a qualifying Matsui Securities balance of 10 million yen or more.
What is important is that
simply depositing 10 million yen into MATSUI Bank does not automatically result in 0.85%
interest.
However, for new accounts, regardless of securities balance,
you get 0.85% for up to 3 months.
Also, even with a qualifying securities balance of less than 1 million yen, if you receive your salary,
0.72%
will be applied.
In a model where 10 million yen is deposited at 0.85% per annum for one year,
Before tax
85,000 yen
After tax
approximately 67,700 yen
is the result.
To summarize this in one sentence,
“The 0.85% maximum is certain. However, the 10 million yen to look at is not the ‘deposit amount’ but the ‘securities balance’.”
is.
