Maverick Wealth Advisors offer new look at finance advising, asset management
One of the top films for 2022 was “Top Gun: Maverick.” Beneath all the glitz and glam of a heart-pounding fighter pilot movie was a man who walked to the beat of his own drum — which is exactly what the financial advisors and support staff at Maverick Wealth Advisors plan to do for Cañon City.
Though founder Michael Morton and his son, Sean Morton, together have been in the financial game for nearly 60 years, Maverick Wealth Advisors will offer Cañon City residents a new look at finance advising and asset management.
The duo spent 20 years working alongside financial services company Raymond James when, about two years ago, they began searching for an alternative partner company.
“Truly being independent was a big reason we moved from Raymond James,” said Sean. “There’s nobody telling us what we can and can’t do anymore.”
After several years of diligent research, the Mortons, along with their partner Andrew Palmasano, settled on Charles Schwab as their next custodian and also Concurrent Investments RIA.
By November, the switch was in full swing for the small but forceful financial group and, though they remained at the same building, located at 618 Macon Ave., a new name was in store.
“My son’s middle name is Maverick but it also embodies what we’re trying to do, one of our taglines is ‘where experience meets innovation’ so it’s where we want to blaze a new trail, [be] a maverick in this industry,” Sean said.
In addition to obtaining new partner companies, the group has also begun incorporating new technology, including updated algorithms for predicting the best times for financial investing.
“This move also allows us to incorporate new lines of business like outside 401K management,” Sean said. “Now we fall under the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) so…now we can do advisory work that is not necessarily held with us.”
Maverick advisors use an advisement strategy termed “advance and defend,” where they use technology and good old experience to, hopefully, provide better returns in the future. Sean noted that “the strategy has produced better returns while also lowering risk.” He went on to detail that, generally, they don’t advise a “buy and hold approach” but, instead, encourage clients to wisely withdraw from an investment during particularly risky periods. In other words, they hope to “defend” assets at every opportunity.
In addition to new portfolio and management opportunities, the move also allows the group to send out monthly newsletters and update digital communication with their clients. The newsletters are designed to let clients know exactly what is happening in the various financial environments of their investments — a huge update from the methods of the past.
“We’re really able to evolve and bring the business into today’s world,” Sean said. “We want to be transparent, we want to be able to tell clients, ‘This is what’s going on.’”
The dedicated group at Maverick serves more than 450 households throughout the country but looks forward to increasing both interactions with daily portfolios and the homes that hold them. They launched their brand new client portal in mid-March and are also in the midst of installing new financial planning software — needless to say, it’s been a busy time for the team.
However, the buck doesn’t stop there for the Maverick group. The future is bright as they hope to bring on more similarly minded advisors and also open satellite offices.
“We want advisors that fit our same mold,” Sean said. “People that have experience but also have the same sort of risk management that we bring to the business.”
The team celebrated their official ribbon cutting as a re-vamped financial group April 19 alongside the Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance, and they will continue to find new ways of growing their clients’ assets.
