Management expects hardware profits to be accompanied by accelerating AI, software, and fleet-based profits. Robotaxi now runs in seven U.S. metros. Investors are valuing an AI platform with an automaker attached.
Record Revenue Meets Negative Cash Flow and a Flat Semi Launch
Tesla rose 2.15% over the past week and 7.6% over the past month. It is still down 17.26% year to date. The stock sits between a 52-week high of $498.83 and a low of $297.38. On September 25, shares fell 1.54% after the Semi truck launch failed to excite investors.
The Q2 earnings report had good news and bad news. Revenue rose 25.52% to $28.24 billion, beating the $26.36 billion estimate. EPS of $0.33 missed expectations of $0.5367. Operating margin shrank to 1.4%.
Robotaxi and Optimus Could Push Tesla Toward $471
Bulls can point to real progress. Active FSD subscriptions reached 1.48 million, up 56% YoY. Unsupervised Robotaxi miles topped 380,000. On the July call, Musk said miles are growing “more than 10% a week.” The Optimus line at Fremont is designed for 1 million robots/year. Services and Other revenue grew 50%.
Wall Street leans positive, with 6 Strong Buy ratings alongside 16 Buy ratings. Our bull scenario reaches $471.56, a 26.73% gain.
A $25 Billion Spending Surge Could Cap Gains
Management expects full-year capex of “more than $25 billion.” Free cash flow was -$1.09 billion last quarter. Musk warned that “if we injure even one person, it will be worldwide headline news.” Traders put only 11.1% chance that Optimus is released by year-end.
Some of the margin drop came from one-time items. Q2 included a warranty true-up of about $240 million. Q1 had a $230 million benefit that did not repeat. Operating cash flow still rose 84.92%. The bear case sits at $359.72.
Tesla Trades at a Steep Premium to GM and NVIDIA
General Motors (NYSE:GM) shows how the market values a traditional automaker. The stock trades at 6x forward earnings, and quarterly revenue grew 1.9%. Tesla’s much higher multiple reflects expectations for autonomy that GM’s valuation does not include.
NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) shows what an AI business worth its price looks like. It earns a 66.2% operating margin at 25x forward earnings.

The bull case strengthens if Robotaxi continues adding metros and FSD subscriptions continues compounding. It weakens if a safety incident slows deployment or cash burn gets worse. On balance, I think the autonomy opportunity outweighs the spending risk.
