NVIDIA quashes PC acquisition rumours: Denies ‘SemiAccurate’ report following Dell, HP stock rally
NVIDIA Corp. issued a formal dismissal of a report by the website SemiAccurate on Monday, refuting claims that the chipmaker is pursuing a major acquisition designed to “reshape the PC landscape.”
The report, which alleged that Nvidia had been involved in negotiations for over a year, triggered a significant midday rally for shares of prominent personal computer manufacturers Dell Technologies Inc. and HP Inc. However, the semiconductor giant moved quickly to quash the speculation.
“The media report is false; Nvidia is not engaged in discussions to acquire any PC maker,” a company representative stated to Bloomberg News.
Market Impact and Industry Standing
Dell and HP represent a substantial portion of the global computer market. According to research firm Gartner Inc., HP, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, commanded 19% of the international market during the first quarter. Round Rock, Texas-based Dell followed closely with a 17% share, both trailing the industry leader, Lenovo Group Ltd., which holds nearly 27%.
NVIDIA currently stands as the most valuable company globally, primarily due to its dominance in the production of processors essential for artificial intelligence. Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang has remained a vocal proponent for the widespread integration of AI, encouraging various sectors to utilise the technology to optimise business operations. In the fiscal year concluding this past January, the company channelled $70 billion into investments with customers and partners to accelerate AI development.
Stock Volatility
The denial had an immediate effect on Wall Street. Following the spokesperson’s remarks, Dell shares retreated 3.4% in after-hours trading. This followed a robust daytime session where the stock surged 6.7% to a record closing high of $189.79. Similarly, HP stock slipped more than 3% in extended trading after finishing the regular session up 5.3% at $19.23.
The partnership between these firms remains lucrative despite the lack of a merger. Dell produces AI-focused servers powered by Nvidia’s hardware and has projected that this specific business segment will account for roughly $50 billion in revenue for the current fiscal year ending in January 2027.
