Prediction: Tesla’s FSD Attach Rate Will “Trend to 100%.” But Will It Be Enough to Save the Stock?
Key Takeaways
-
Over 75% of Tesla’s new North American deliveries in the third quarter came with FSD, up from over 55% in the second.
-
Venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson predicts that attach rate will “trend to 100%.”
-
FSD is nearing $1 billion of annual recurring revenue, about 1% of Tesla’s sales, so it helps margins more than growth.
-
At a forward P/E far above its five-year average, the stock needs Robotaxi, which Elon Musk expects to show up in results around the second quarter of 2027.
Tesla (TSLA:NASDAQ) fell 3.3% on Nov. 4 and another 10.8% on Nov. 5, closing at $343.69, after Democrats swept Congress in the Nov. 3 midterms and AI and chip stocks sold off.
Tesla’s bulls would rather talk about a different number. Over 75% of Tesla’s new North American deliveries in the third quarter came with FSD (Supervised), up from over 55% in the second quarter. Tesla said it believes FSD “is driving demand in markets where it is available.”
Steve Jurvetson, an early Tesla investor and former Tesla director, went further on X:
“As we are on a path to the inevitable near future where FSD will be the sole purchase criteria, it follows that the attach rate for that sole purchase criteria will trend to 100%”
There’s a catch. Every new Tesla comes with a free month of FSD, though the CFO said those buyers signed up for a paid subscription at delivery. An RBC analyst estimated the paid rate at 30% to 40%, and Tesla didn’t address that number directly.
A Billion Dollars Doesn’t Go Far at Tesla
On the third-quarter call, CFO Vaibhav Taneja agreed with New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu that FSD is nearing $1 billion of annual recurring revenue. Against $103.6 billion of revenue over the last 12 months, that’s about 1% of the business, and analysts expect the business to get a lot bigger:
That’s about $51 billion of growth from 2025 to 2028. Even if FSD’s run rate doubled, it would add only about $1 billion a year.
Where FSD helps is margin, and Tesla needs the help, because its share of US EV sales has been slipping.

Tesla’s Lead Has Been Caught Before
Gary Black of The Future Fund replied on X to a bull who said no one is near FSD that bulls “said the same thing about competitors catching TSLA on building out EVs, but that turned out to be false as Chinese EV manufacturers were able to quickly match TSLA on manufactured cost.”
Tesla’s gross margin has never gotten back to its 2022 peak:
It was 19.6% in the third quarter of 2026, including $786 million of tariff refunds that cut cost of revenues.
FSD subscriptions can also be canceled. Tesla’s 1.74 million active FSD customers, up 67% in a year, exclude free trials but include owners who bought it outright. Half now pay monthly, and Tesla hasn’t disclosed churn.
Investors Are Paying for Robotaxi
On Nov. 2, before the selloff, Tesla traded at 189x forward earnings, about 75% above its five-year average of 108x:
Even after the drop, it’s far above that average. Analysts see normalized EPS of $3.24 in 2028, still below the $4.07 Tesla earned in 2022. Buyers here are paying for profits that aren’t in the estimates yet.
What Tesla Stock Needs From Robotaxi
The attach rate was the best news in Tesla’s quarter, and Europe could push it higher: FSD (Supervised) is live in nine EU countries, and Musk said he’d be surprised if EU-wide approval took longer than the first quarter of 2027.
FSD on every new Tesla still won’t carry this multiple alone. Robotaxi has to, and Musk expects it to make a noticeable contribution around the second quarter of 2027. In January, he expected unsupervised autonomy in dozens of major US cities by the end of 2026. With under two months left, Q2 2027 is the date I’d hold him to.
