Market on Tuesday | Market snaps four-day winning streak
Indian benchmark indices ended lower on August 4, snapping a four-session winning streak as investors booked profits amid weekly derivatives expiry, heightened volatility following the rollout of the NSE’s new Closing Auction Session (CAS), and caution ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy decision due on Wednesday.
At close, the Sensex was down 210.08 points or 0.27 percent at 78,428.95, and the Nifty was down 159.40 points or 0.64 percent at 24,614.90.
Among broader indices, the Nifty midcap index shed 0.3 percent, while smallcap index was up 0.2 percent.
Biggest Nifty lower were Grasim Industries, HDFC Life, Max Healthcare, Bajaj Auto, Reliance Industries, while gainers included Hindalco, Trent, Apollo Hospitals, Jio Financial and Eternal.
Sectoral performance remained largely negative, with Nifty Realty emerging as the top loser, declining 2.4%, followed by Nifty Oil & Gas (-1.1%), Nifty FMCG (-0.9%), Nifty Private Bank (-0.7%), Nifty IT (-0.8%), Nifty Bank (-0.6%),, Nifty Consumer Durables (-0.7%), Nifty Infra (-0.9%), Nifty Auto (-0.4%). On the gaining side, Nifty Media outperformed the broader market, advancing 2%, followed by Nifty Metal, which gained 0.9%.
