Social Security is being paid out on Wednesday, April 22: who receives benefits?
Certain Social Security beneficiaries in the U.S. are next week due to be sent their latest monthly money, in what is the final payment run on the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) schedule for April 2026.
Who’s receiving Social Security benefits on Wednesday, April 22?
The SSA is to issue Social Security benefits to recipients born on the 21st to 31st of any month. (NB: If you claim based on someone else’s work record, the agency uses the other person’s birthday.)
Of the nearly 71 million people who claim Social Security – whether retirement, disability or survivor benefits – the majority are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month.
In April 2026, this birthday-dependent payment cycle is:
- Born on 1st to 10th of any month: Wednesday, April 8
- Born on 11th to 20th of any month: Wednesday, April 15
- Born on 21st to 31st of any month: Wednesday, April 22
How much is paid to Social Security beneficiaries?
- Retired workers: $2,079.49
- Disabled workers: $1,634.51
- Survivor benefits: $1,624.37
(Average monthly benefit, per SSA stats.)

Who isn’t paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in April?
- Certain long-term beneficiaries: April 3
Social Security recipients who started claiming before May 1997 are paid on the third of each month.
- Dual beneficiaries: April 3
Social Security can be combined with Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a separate program for certain low-income individuals. People who claim both benefits get Social Security on the third, with SSI sent out on the first.
How does Social Security pay monthly benefits?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can update their bank-account information using the SSA’s online my Social Security tool.
- Direct Express
Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal disbursements to people without a bank account. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
