Social Security is paid out on Wednesday, October 14: who benefits?
In the U.S., certain recipients of Social Security benefits are due to get their latest payment next week, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) continues the program’s October distribution schedule.
Who gets Social Security on Wednesday, October 14?
Of the nearly 71.5 million Social Security beneficiaries in the U.S., most are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, depending on their date of birth.
October 14 is the second Wednesday in the month, so benefits are to be sent out to recipients born from the first to the 10th of any month.
October 2026’s complete three-Wednesdays cycle:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: Social Security paid on Wednesday, October 14
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: Social Security paid on Wednesday, October 21
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: Social Security paid on Wednesday, October 28
NB: If you get Social Security benefits based on someone else’s employment record, the SSA uses the other person’s birthday.

What other Social Security payment dates are there in October 2026?
Next Wednesday is the second of a total of four distribution dates on the SSA’s Social Security schedule for October. Last week, the agency began this month’s program timeline with a payment run that is not birthday-dependent:
- Friday, October 2: Social Security paid to dual beneficiaries and certain long-term recipients
Last Friday, October’s Social Security benefits were sent out to recipients who have been getting their monthly payments since before May 1997.
Friday 2 was also this month’s Social Security date for beneficiaries who are concurrently signed up to the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme.
A program for certain low-income Americans, SSI differs from Social Security benefits as it is needs-based. Unlike Social Security, eligibility for SSI does not depend on a claimant’s work history. Worth an average of $736.54 per month, SSI was paid for October on Thursday 1.
How much are monthly Social Security benefits?
- Retirement: $2,033.27
- Disability: $1,498.94
- Survivor: $1,635.70
Average benefit, according to figures shared by the SSA for August 2026.
How much will the 2027 COLA be? When is it announced?
In an attempt to ensure Social Security and SSI benefits keep up with the pace of inflation, the SSA is preparing to raise monthly payments in January 2027 – a measure known as the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).
Per the latest forecast published by experts at the Senior Citizens League, the agency is projected to increase benefits by 3.5% next year. The SSA is expected to confirm the 2027 COLA percentage on October 14, 2026.
How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank details using the online “my Social Security” tool.
- Direct Express
Money can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for people without a bank account. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
