Social Security payment schedule September 2026: When will you get your check?

Most people who receive Social Security retirement benefits will receive their September 2026 payments as usual, with checks and direct deposits distributed according to the Social Security Administration’s standard schedule.

Here’s what to know about September Social Security payments, including when Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive their benefits. While SSI and Social Security are separate programs, about half of SSI recipients also receive Social Security benefits.

Social Security payment dates for September 2026

The Social Security Administration has published its 2026 benefit payment schedule.

If you receive regular Social Security benefits, your September payment will arrive on one of the following dates, depending on your birthdate and when you began receiving benefits:

• Thursday, Sept. 3: People who began receiving benefits before May 1997

• Wednesday, Sept. 9: Birthdates from the 1st through the 10th

• Wednesday, Sept. 16: Birthdates from the 11th through the 20th

• Wednesday, Sept. 23: Birthdates from the 21st through the 31st

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income provides monthly payments to people who are:

• Age 65 or older

• Living with a qualifying disability and who meet strict income and asset requirements

SSI is a separate program from Social Security retirement benefits and is funded differently. Some people receive both types of benefits.

When will SSI recipients receive their September payment?

SSI recipients will receive their September payment on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

When the first day of a month falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the Social Security Administration generally issues SSI payments on the preceding business day, according to SSA policy.

Looking ahead, SSI recipients will receive two payments in October. The first will arrive Oct. 1, while the second will arrive Oct. 30. The Oct. 30 payment is actually the November 2026 SSI payment because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday.

Remaining SSI payment dates in 2026

According to the SSA’s 2026 payment schedule, the remaining SSI payment dates for 2026 are:

• Thursday, Oct. 1: October payment

• Friday, Oct. 30: November payment

• Tuesday, Dec. 1: December payment

• Thursday, Dec. 31: January 2027 payment
