Social Security September payments: When benefits will arrive? What’s the average amount?

The Social Security Administration will begin issuing September payments in a little more than a week, with the first round going to some more than 7 million people who receive Supplemental Security Income.

SSI payments will be distributed Sept. 1. Payments average about $740 a month and go to some million low-income senior citizens, people with disabilities and blindness.

SSI payments are typically sent on the first of each month unless that day falls on a weekend or a holiday. SSI recipients will receive two payments in October- Oct. 1 and Oct. 30 – because Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday. They will again receive two payments in December. Dec. 1 and Dec. 30 – because Jan. 1, 2027, is the New Year’s Day federal holiday.

Social Security payment schedule

Traditional Social Security is paid based on the recipient’s day of birth. People born from the first – 10^th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month; people born 11^th – 30^th– are paid on the third Wednesday; and people born 21^st – 31^st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

In September, those dates are Sept. 9, 16 and 23^rd.

More than 70 million people receive benefits from Social Security. The vast majority of these – 56 million – are retired workers and their dependents. The average monthly benefit for retired workers is $2,084.
