Stock Market Midday, Oct. 20: Blue Chips Rally, Eli Lilly Gains 5%
As of 11:36 AM ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) is up 0.91% to 52,437 as blue-chips outperform, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) has climbed 0.31% to 7,715 and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) is up 0.08% to 26,460.
Gold is trading down 0.20% to $4,131.70, and the 10-Year Treasury yield fell 3 basis points to 5.11%. The utilities and healthcare sectors led the gainers while communication stocks fell.
Today’s biggest moves
Eli Lilly climbed 5% this morning on metabolic drug pipeline advancements, while 3M surged following an earnings beat and data-center deal with Amazon.com. Conversely, General Motors tumbled over 6% as rising cost pressures overshadowed strong truck sales, and Steel Dynamics traded lower following an earnings miss.
What this means for investors
Blue chip stocks outperformed this morning as the Dow gained 600 points following a retreat in oil prices amid new hopes of diplomatic progress in the Middle East. Data showing a plunge in pending home sales for September put additional pressure on homebuilders and real estate stocks.
Tech stocks remain volatile, though chipmakers edged higher today, potentially driven by dip buying. News that South Korean data center provider, Elice Inc., plummeted more than 30% on its first day of trading on the Kosdaq shows that investors remain cautious on the artificial intelligence (AI) trade.
SpaceX earnings, due after the bell today, along with Meta Platforms tomorrow, will give more insight into the sustainability of heavy AI spending. For investors, a long-term focus on maintaining a diversified portfolio of companies with strong fundamentals remains crucial.
