Trump-Endorsed Michigan Gov Candidate Blasts US-Canada Trade Dispute: ‘Stop Acting Like Children’

Republican Michigan gubernatorial candidate Rep. John James (R-MI) urged both sides of the U.S.-Canada trade war to return to the negotiating table,  saying they need to “stop acting like children.”

James, who won President Donald Trump’s endorsement for the contest against Democrat Jocelyn Benson, spoke out against the ongoing trade dispute he appeared on Face the Nation on Sunday.

“I understand how crucial our relationship with Canada is, and I understand how crucial it is that the status quo does not continue,” he told host Margaret Brennan. “Michigan has lost over 300,000 manufacturing jobs since the ’90s, and that cannot continue. But at the same time, we need the negotiators to go back to the table, stop acting like children, and negotiate a fair, mutually beneficial reciprocal deal that will benefit the United States of America and the state of Michigan.”

As Brennan noted that steep 50 percent tariffs against Canada would take effect on the very day he would assume office if he wins the election, James added: “Well, we’re already talking with members of the trade team, and we’re gonna be continuing to engage with them so we can avoid those things.”

The trade war has so far resulted in insults from both sides of the border, and even prompted Trump to issue an executive order renaming Lake Ontario Lake America after a particular bitter spat between him and Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

Trump endorsed James back in June, writing in a Truth Social post in part, “A West Point Graduate, Combat Pilot, Brave Iraq War Veteran, Successful Businessman and Job Creator, and now, as a Highly Respected U.S. Congressman, John has proven he has the Courage and Wisdom to deliver strong results for the incredible people of his wonderful State, and our Nation.”
