(US Economy 10.27) US stocks continue to rise, led by gains in AI-related tech stocks
The US stock market continued to rise on October 27, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index leading the major stock indices. Buying in AI-related stocks pushed the market higher.
Buying returns to AI-related stocks
Expectations surrounding the IPO of AI development company Anthropic grew, and semiconductor stocks rose for the third consecutive trading day. The semiconductor stock index has risen 62.1% year-to-date, significantly outperforming the 12.8% gain of the S&P 500 index over the same period.
Meanwhile, concerns over rising borrowing costs and financing AI investments with debt remain a focus.
Meta expands funding plan
Meta Platforms announced it would increase the amount of funding raised through stock issuance to $97.5 billion to expand its AI business. The stock price fell 1.6%.
Mixed results following corporate earnings
Boeing’s adjusted earnings fell significantly below market expectations, causing its stock price to drop 10.7%. Conversely, UPS, which raised its full-year earnings outlook, rose 5.8%, and Royal Caribbean also climbed 5.5%.
Summary
Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, information technology was the top gainer. Meanwhile, oil prices fell amid attention on Middle East peace negotiations, causing the energy sector to decline.
