Early voter surveys in the US midterm elections point to widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s direction, economic conditions and President Donald Trump’s performance, with cost of living and concerns over governance emerging as key issues for voters.
Preliminary findings from CNN’s Voter Poll suggest that a significant share of Americans are unhappy with the state of the nation and the economy. NBC News’ early exit poll findings also indicate that many voters cast their ballots in opposition to Trump, holding his administration responsible for high prices and what they see as a weakening economy.
The Associated Press’ Voter Poll identified the cost of living and government corruption as among the leading concerns influencing voters. The survey also found considerable dissatisfaction with the president, while roughly seven in 10 respondents said Congress was doing “not enough” to provide checks and balances on the presidency.
A CBS News exit poll put Trump’s approval rating at 38 per cent. The network reported that this was the lowest approval rating recorded for a US president at the time of a midterm election in the 20 years since it began conducting such surveys.
The early findings come as polling stations begin closing across the country, with the results set to determine control of Congress for the remaining two years of Trump’s term.
Polling locations in parts of Indiana and Kentucky were the first to close at 6 pm ET (11 pm GMT). Voting is taking place for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate, alongside several state and local positions.
Democrats are seeking to regain control of Congress, while Republicans are defending their majorities in both chambers. The outcome will determine the extent of congressional support available to Trump’s legislative agenda and could shape the administration’s ability to advance its priorities.
The voter surveys offer an early indication of the issues and sentiments shaping the election, although the final results will depend on vote counting across states.
