US Stock Futures Edge Higher as Fed Chair Warsh Avoids Rate Guidance and Tesla Unveils New Roadster: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq, Wall Street
US stock futures traded slightly higher on Friday, 16 October 2026, following gains on Wall Street in the previous session as technology shares recovered from selling pressure linked to concerns about artificial intelligence investment and corporate borrowing.
Investors were assessing comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who declined to indicate the likely outcome of the central bank’s October interest rate meeting despite acknowledging inflationary pressures.
Elsewhere, reports suggested that investors were reconsidering the potential valuation of artificial intelligence developer Anthropic (NASDAQ:ANTP), while Taiwan was reportedly examining tighter restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports to China.
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) also attracted attention after demonstrating a redesigned Roadster equipped with rocket-inspired propulsion technology.
Dow and S&P 500 Futures Advance After Wall Street Recovery
At 02:59 ET (06:59 GMT), Dow Jones futures had increased by 75 points, or 0.1%, while S&P 500 futures rose by seven points, also representing a 0.1% gain. Nasdaq 100 futures were broadly unchanged.
The modest increases followed a positive session for the main US stock indices on Thursday, when equities recovered from declines earlier in the week.
Those losses had been associated with concerns about the substantial borrowing used to finance artificial intelligence infrastructure and the effect of elevated interest rates on technology companies.
CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV), whose sharp share price decline on Wednesday contributed to wider selling across AI-related stocks, stabilised during Thursday’s session.
Analysts at ING said the recovery had eased some immediate concerns, although uncertainty surrounding inflation and technology valuations remained.
“Financial markets have calmed a little after CoreWeave stock bounced on Thursday. But the debate between intensifying price pressures needing tighter monetary policy and a tech correction requiring a softer policy outlook continues,” the analysts said.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh Declines to Signal October Rate Decision
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh offered a positive assessment of the US economy during an event in Thailand, noting its resilience despite tighter monetary conditions.
However, he also acknowledged concerns about rising prices following discussions with central bank officials from other countries.
Warsh said it was “hard to be in a discussion” with fellow central bankers and “not compare notes and hear the same thing about the surge in prices.”
Despite these concerns, he declined to provide specific guidance on the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision.
Warsh said he did not “believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year.”
His comments maintained the central bank’s flexibility ahead of its scheduled policy meeting on 27–28 October.
The Federal Reserve increased interest rates by 25 basis points in September as part of its efforts to bring inflation back towards its 2% target.
Although some policymakers have indicated that additional increases may be necessary, they have also emphasised the importance of assessing incoming economic data.
Market expectations currently favour unchanged rates at the October meeting.
Expectations of an immediate increase briefly strengthened following higher-than-anticipated US consumer inflation figures earlier in the week, but subsequently eased.
Investors are instead considering the possibility of another 25-basis-point increase at the Federal Reserve’s final meeting of the year in December.
Anthropic Investors Reassess Potential IPO Valuation
Some existing and prospective investors in Anthropic (NASDAQ:ANTP) are reportedly reconsidering the company’s potential valuation ahead of a possible initial public offering, according to Reuters.
The developer of the Claude artificial intelligence chatbot has reportedly been considering a stock market flotation as early as November.
Following investor meetings in San Francisco on Wednesday, some participants discussed a valuation of approximately $1.5 trillion, compared with an earlier estimate of around $2 trillion.
The lower figure represents a potential reduction of approximately 25% from the previously discussed valuation.
According to media reports, Anthropic told investors that its third-quarter revenue had increased by 45% to $16.8 billion.
The reported increase indicated continued demand for its artificial intelligence products, although analysts highlighted a slowdown in the rate of revenue growth compared with the preceding period.
The valuation discussions remain preliminary, and no final IPO pricing or timetable was confirmed in the report.
Taiwan Considers Tighter AI Semiconductor Export Restrictions
Taiwan is reportedly examining additional restrictions on exports of advanced artificial intelligence semiconductors to China.
Bloomberg News reported that the proposed measures would bring Taiwan’s export controls into closer alignment with those of the United States.
The discussions are understood to focus on strengthening authorities’ ability to prevent the diversion of advanced computing equipment, including AI servers containing Nvidia processors, from Taiwan to mainland China.
The proposed restrictions follow concerns that some advanced chips have continued to reach China despite US export controls introduced in 2022.
Reports have identified possible smuggling routes through Southeast Asia.
Additional Taiwanese measures could increase trade tensions with Beijing, which has previously criticised American restrictions on semiconductor exports.
The report did not specify when Taiwan might introduce the proposed controls or whether a final decision had been made.
Tesla Demonstrates Roadster With Rocket-Inspired Thrusters
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) unveiled a redesigned version of its Roadster electric sports car on Thursday evening during an event at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas.
The vehicle incorporated propulsion technology developed using SpaceX expertise, allowing it to perform aerial manoeuvres during the demonstration.
Tesla showed the Roadster travelling up a curved ramp before leaving the surface, rotating through a full inversion and using air thrusters to adjust its orientation before landing on all four wheels.
The company also demonstrated the vehicle jumping over parked cars and a semi-truck.
Chief Executive Elon Musk said production of the redesigned Roadster was expected to begin in 2028.
The proposed timetable comes more than a decade after Tesla first presented plans for a new generation of its electric sports car.
Tesla shares gained more than 3% in extended trading following the presentation.
The demonstration illustrated the vehicle’s proposed capabilities, although commercial production remains subject to the company’s development schedule.
Markets Assess Monetary Policy, AI Valuations and Technology Developments
Friday’s early market movements reflected a combination of recovering technology shares, uncertainty about US interest rates and developments across the artificial intelligence industry.
US futures indicated modest gains following Thursday’s recovery, while investors continued to monitor concerns about inflation and the financing of large-scale technology investment.
The Federal Reserve’s October meeting remains an important event for financial markets, with expectations currently favouring unchanged interest rates.
Meanwhile, Anthropic’s reported valuation discussions, potential Taiwanese semiconductor export restrictions and Tesla’s Roadster demonstration provided additional developments for technology investors to assess.
