US Stock Futures Rise Ahead of Federal Reserve Decision and Major Technology Earnings
US stock index futures advanced on Monday following two consecutive weeks of declines for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, as investors prepared for a Federal Reserve interest rate decision and quarterly earnings from several major technology companies.
At 06:06 ET (10:06 GMT), S&P 500 futures were up 23 points, or 0.3%, while Nasdaq 100 futures gained 79 points, also rising 0.3%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advanced 245 points, equivalent to 0.5%.
The gains followed selling pressure in technology and artificial intelligence-related shares, driven partly by concerns about borrowing costs and the financing of large infrastructure investments.
Market attention is now turning to the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting, beginning Tuesday, alongside economic data and corporate earnings announcements scheduled throughout the week.
Technology Shares Weigh on US Equity Markets
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have recorded two consecutive weeks of losses, with technology companies accounting for a substantial portion of the declines.
Investors have been reassessing valuations across businesses exposed to artificial intelligence, particularly those undertaking large capital expenditure programmes.
Concerns have centred on the amount of debt being used to finance AI infrastructure and the potential effects of elevated interest rates on investment returns.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average performed differently during the period, supported by buying interest in sectors including healthcare, utilities and industrials.
These sectors attracted investment as market participants adjusted their exposure to technology companies.
Monday’s increase in equity futures indicated a partial recovery ahead of several events that could influence expectations for corporate profitability and monetary policy.
Federal Reserve Expected to Hold Interest Rates
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to begin its two-day monetary policy meeting on Tuesday, with an interest rate announcement expected on Wednesday.
Market participants widely anticipate that the central bank will leave borrowing costs unchanged following its September decision to increase rates for the first time since 2023.
Federal Reserve officials have continued to emphasise the objective of returning inflation to the central bank’s 2% target.
However, some policymakers have indicated that an immediate additional rate increase may not be necessary.
As a result, investors will be monitoring comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh following the policy announcement.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank said the central bank could maintain a restrictive policy outlook even if it decides against raising rates at the forthcoming meeting.
“The overall message is still likely to favour tighter monetary policy. Our economists believe recent inflation figures support further rate increases over time, even if the Fed leaves rates unchanged this week,” the analysts wrote.
According to CME’s FedWatch Tool, market pricing indicated approximately a 73% probability of another interest rate increase at the Federal Open Market Committee’s final meeting of the year in December.
The probability reflects market expectations at the time of the report and may change as new economic information becomes available.
US GDP and Inflation Data Could Influence Rate Expectations
Investors will also receive economic indicators that could affect expectations for future Federal Reserve decisions.
An advance estimate of third-quarter US gross domestic product is scheduled for release during the week.
The report will provide information about the pace of economic activity and the contributions of household spending, business investment and other components of output.
September’s personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index is also due.
The PCE index is the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation and will provide updated information about price developments.
The central bank will assess these figures alongside labour market conditions and other economic indicators when considering future monetary policy adjustments.
Verizon, Visa and Major Technology Companies Prepare to Report
Corporate earnings will form another major part of the week’s financial market calendar.
Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Welltower (NYSE:WELL) are scheduled to publish their quarterly results on Monday.
On Tuesday, Visa (NYSE:V), Boeing (NYSE:BA) and Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) are among the largest companies expected to report.
Technology earnings will become a particular focus later in the week.
Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are scheduled to announce results on Wednesday, followed by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) on Thursday.
The reports will provide information about revenue growth, operating profitability, cash flow and capital expenditure plans.
Investors will pay particular attention to spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and the extent to which those investments are contributing to business performance.
Recent concerns have focused on the combination of substantial infrastructure commitments, increasing debt and elevated financing costs.
The earnings announcements could provide additional information about how major technology companies are managing these factors.
Oil Prices Decline Amid US-Iran Diplomatic Efforts
Oil prices moved lower on Monday following reports of diplomatic activity involving Qatar, Iran and the United States.
Qatari mediators reportedly travelled to Tehran over the weekend to explore possible measures to reduce tensions between Iran and Washington.
The discussions followed reports that US President Donald Trump was considering further military action against Iran after the November midterm elections.
Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Trump said it was “approaching the point when a decision must be made” about whether to conduct additional strikes or pursue an agreement with Tehran.
Iranian officials had previously warned of retaliatory measures in response to further military action.
Regional tensions have also been affected by exchanges of attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.
These developments have raised concerns about potential interruptions to oil production and transportation in the Middle East.
The decline in crude prices on Monday followed reports of diplomatic efforts, although the possibility of further disruption remained relevant to energy market expectations.
Analysts Anticipate Continued Market Volatility
Analysts at Neuberger said the combination of corporate earnings, monetary policy decisions and political developments could contribute to further fluctuations in financial markets.
In a research note, the analysts said the coming weeks could bring “volatility” as third-quarter earnings, the Federal Reserve meeting and the US midterm elections occur against an “already unstable environment”.
The assessment reflects the number of developments that investors will be monitoring over the coming weeks.
Corporate earnings will provide information about business performance and investment spending, while the Federal Reserve’s announcement will influence expectations for borrowing costs.
Economic data, geopolitical developments and the approaching US elections will provide additional considerations for market participants.
Monday’s gains in stock index futures marked an initial recovery following recent declines, ahead of the scheduled announcements.
